Iowa commission takes one small step against CAFOs (desmoinesdem)

Confined-animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, impose huge health, economic and environmental costs on society, but Iowa policy-makers have been unwilling to impose many restrictions on where they can be located. However, on Tuesday Iowa's Environmental Protection Commission voted to reject permits for two new CAFOs in the state's fastest-growing county. Bleeding Heartland has more on this story.

LA-06: Cazayoux's Gittin' It Done! (DailyKingFish)

The race in LA-06 this fall will largely be a media war, along with a ground game geared to getting Democratic voters registered to vote, and out to vote on Election Day. I'm glad to say that Don Cazayoux, the new Congressman that was elected to fill out former Rep. Baker's term in May, is kicking ass and taking names. He's already put up two new ads, which you can view here and here.

Secrets of the American Future Fund (chase martyn)

An under the radar conservative group called the American Future Fund has been running ads in close Senate races across the country (e.g., Minnesota, Colorado, Louisiana), and its efforts are likely to pick up significantly over the next 3 months. They have ties to the Willie Horton ad and the Swift Boat Vets ad, and they aren't talking about where they get their money. Click here to read a really thorough investigative piece about the group, published today.

IA-04: Would-be independent candidate fails to qualify for ballot (desmoinesdem)

After Becky Greenwald won a four-way Democratic primary in Iowa's fourth district with more than 50 percent of the vote, Marine veteran William Meyers, who finished a distant third, vowed to run for Congress as an independent. However, Meyers did not submit signed petitions to the Secretary of State's office by August 15, the deadline for qualifying for the ballot. Meyers issued a statement claiming he had "surrendered" his petitions to unnamed Democratic leaders, who then failed to keep unspecified promises made to him. Although Meyers told Iowa Independent he plans to run as a write-in candidate, he has not been actively campaigning for Congress this summer. Instead, he has focused his energy on a website that aims to repeal the public smoking ban enacted in Iowa this year.

TX-Sen: They Don't Call it a Stump Speech for Nothing (KTinTX)

Rick Noriega gives his stump speech in Tyler, Texas... from an actual tree stump.

“So many Texans, right now, if they got $4 in their pocket, they’ve got to decide if they’re going to spend it on a gallon of gas, or a gallon of milk,” said Noriega. “In the State House, I had the good fortune of being able to work in a bipartisan way to get things done, fighting for the people of the State of Texas. It’s time we had that leadership in Washington, D.C.”

MN-Sen: Coleman: Minnesotans support my not paying rent! (Senate Guru)

Watch Smilin' Norm Coleman squirm as he gets questioned by the media on ApartmentGate.

It's not not paying taxes billions of dollars of income; it is a shoebox that I spend a couple waking hours in. And, as I travel the state, I gotta tell you, people of Minnesota actually appreciate the fact that I live humbly as a Senator.
Yeah, very humble, Coleman. Humble and clearly inappropriate. I guess that since it's just an apartment and it's not billions of dollars, it's perfectly OK that Norm Coleman doesn't pay his monthly rent to his landlord (a friend and Republican operative whose wife Coleman employed), while countless Minnesotan families struggle with coming up with their monthly rents.

OR-5: Mike Erickson's "humanitarian" Cuba trip - marlin fishing, five-star hotels, clubbing (and...?) (karichisholm)

The full story is expected in the Sunday Oregonian newspaper, but here's what we've got so far:

Despite the U.S government's rather draconian restrictions for travel to the island nation, Erickson was able to swing it for what he describes as a humanitarian trip to provide medical supplies and equipment to disabled people and poverty stricken communities.

But as with everything else involving Mike Erickson, the truth appears to be a wee bit different from his description. The O snagged a copy of the travel itinerary provided to Erickson and others who paid for the trip. Five star hotels, cigars, yummy adult beverages, a gala auction (arriving in style in "vintage automobiles"), tour of the Partargas factory, etc. The O also notes that the itinerary included marlin fishing and nightclub visits.

Stay tuned. And learn more about the Democratic candidate, Kurt Schrader.

MN-03: Madia vs. Paulsen on Energy (MN Campaign Report)

Thanks to the campaigns of Ashwin Madia (D) and Erik Paulsen (R) publishing platform papers on energy, we can have a full comparison of their proposals on the issue.

Bottom line: Madia is more clear, more specific, and flat-out better on energy than Paulsen. Oh, and Paulsen voted against a bunch of energy proposals in the State House this year.

The Associated Press is reporting "A gunman entered the Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters and shot the party chairman, who is hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. The gunman asked to speak to the party chairman, Bill Gwatney, and fired three shots." Gwatney's assailant was described to police by his secretary as a white man in his 40s driving a blue pick up truck. Police wounded a man fitting that description outside of Little Rock. The article gives no reason for the man to attempt to kill Gwatney.
